Public service loan forgiveness Process
Public Service Loan Forgiveness is a federal plan meant to persuade students to take up relatively low-paying occupations, such as fire protection, education, nursing, government, the military and public interest law.
To be tax-exempt, you must have worked for a government or non-profit organization for 10 years.
Kristin Bhaumik, deputy director of the University of Michigan’s Department of Financial Assistance, said PSLF would be useful to graduates planning to follow a career in public services anyway. She states: “For most people in the last decade, it’s been a long time to plan the future just to allow a loan.”
You can use the PSLF Help Tool on the Federal Student Assistance website to determine eligibility based on the kind of loan you have and your owner.

PSLF Qualifying Employer
Eligible employment in the PSLF program has nothing to do with the specific job you do for your employer. Instead, it has to do with your employment status. Employment in the following types of organizations is eligible for PSLF:
- Government agencies at all levels (US federal, state, provincial or tribal)
- Nonprofit organizations that are tax-free under Section 501 (c) (3) of the IRS
Volunteer service with AmeriCorps or the Peace Corps full-time is also considered skilled work for the PSLF program.
The following categories of firms do not meet the criteria for PSLF:
- Partisan political organizations
- Labour unions
- For-profit organizations, as well as for-profit government contractors.
- Full-time Employment
For PSLF, if you meet the employer’s definition of a full-time job or work at least 30 hours a week (whichever is longer), it is usually considered a full-time job.
If you have multiple part-time jobs simultaneously and work with your employer, on average more than 30 hours a week, you are considered full-time.
Suppose you are an employee of a non-profit organization. In that case, the time spent on religious education, worship, or any form of religious reform may not count towards meeting the requirements for a full-time job.
