Here’s the scoop.

Student Loans

The rejection of another 4,500 educators for student loan forgiveness seems to be a continuing theme. They apparently believed that they met all requirements. According to the Polito

  • Over 4,500 educators were denied the Public Service loan forgiveness program.
  • This was done in 2700 schools.
  • In all 50 States, plus Washington, D.C.

This rejection raises a simple question Should teachers who taught for 10+ years get student loan forgiveness? These stats suggest that the issue of student loan forgiveness wasn’t a local problem in any one school district. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program has a 98% rejection ratio, according to the latest statistics. Based on data from the Student Borrower Protection Center, an advocacy group for students, 80% of student loan applicants will continue to lose their eligibility for student loan forgiveness after 2026. It is believed that this would be sufficient to qualify students for loan forgiveness. In 2007, US Congress has created the Public Service Loan Forgiveness and President George W. Bush signed into law the bill. The program provides total federal student loan cancellation for student loan borrowers who work full time (at least 30 hours per Semaine) for a qualified employer or public service and meet other requirements. Teachers, nurses, and doctors, as well as firefighters and police officers, physicians, attorneys, and members of the military, are included. Secretary Miguel Cardona of the U.S. Department of Education has stated that the department is committed to student loan forgiveness. Biden campaigned for student loan forgiveness reform to make it simpler, easier, and less bureaucratic. This is in contrast to the current 10-year process or 120 monthly payments. The Education Department hosted public hearings and received public comments concerning how to best solve student loan forgiveness. (These are 17 ways Biden can fix student-loan forgiveness. Any potential changes will take some time. However, the Biden administration is determined to align the intentions of public-service loan forgiveness with the actual results. How to get student loans forgiven?

Although the denial rate for student loans forgiveness is high, there are many mistakes that student loan borrowers make when applying to public service loan forgiveness. Here are some mistakes to avoid

1. Incomplete paperwork

This is very obvious. However, submitting incomplete or incorrect paperwork can result in your student loan repayment being denied. For example, incomplete paperwork, material typos, or missing dates are all examples.

How Do I Get Approved? Your employer must sign the Employer Certification Form. This ensures that only an authorized signatory (not your co-worker) is signing the document.

2. Wrong student loan

Many student loan borrowers believe they have met all requirements. They diligently work for public service employers only to find that their student loans do not qualify. This could be due to incorrect information or not knowing the exact requirements. For example, Direct Loans only qualify for student loan forgiveness. Perkins Loans, FFELP Loans, and private loans do not qualify for student loan forgiveness.

How do I get approved? Consolidate my FFELP loan into a Direct Consolidation loan. This will make student loans eligible for forgiveness. It can be done through the U.S. Department of Education.

3. Wrong student loan repayment

To be eligible to get student loan forgiveness you must be enrolled in an income-driven repayment program. Many student loan borrowers disregard this requirement and instead choose any repayment plan. Income-driven repayment plans can include Income-Based Repayment (IBR), Revised Payment As You Earn, or (REPAYE). Make sure to contact your student loans servicer before you seek public service loan forgiveness.

How Do I Get Approved? Enrolling in an income-driven repayment program is not enough. If you’re enrolled in an income-driven repayment plan, it is necessary to make at least a large portion of your federal loan payments. Be sure to meet this requirement, and plan accordingly.

4. Wrong employer

Keep in mind this golden rule when it comes to public service loan forgiveness. It is your employer and not the position that will qualify you. There is a big difference. It doesn’t matter if you are full-time a teacher at a public school. You will be considered qualified if your employer is a qualified public service organization. It is unlikely that you would be eligible if you work in a private business that has the state as its client.

How Do I Get Approved? Before you start your journey towards student loans forgiveness 2022, ensure you work for a qualified private or non-profit company. Your employer may not be eligible. To check if you are eligible, use the Public Service Lender Forgiveness Help Tool

It doesn’t matter if you aren’t sure if your student loan eligibility will be granted or if you don’t expect student loans to be canceled. You should be aware of all your options regarding student loan repayment. Here are some great ways to save money on student loans

  • Student loan refinance (lower monthly payment + interest rate)
