Alternatives are available for those who do not meet the requirements of loan forgiveness
There is hope even if there are private student loans in default.
Arrange a settlement. The federal and private governments are generally willing to waive collections fees, reduce the interest and waive some of your principal balance. File bankruptcy. Most borrowers will be able to pay off student loans with loan consolidation or loan rehabilitation. Unfortunately, these programs are only available to borrowers for a limited time. If all of those options have been exhausted and you are unable or unwilling to accept a settlement offer, your only recourse is to file student debt bankruptcy in order to meet the legal requirement for undue burden.
Refinance. Although student debt refinances cannot be used to forgive a loan, you could still save thousands of dollars on interest. You must have good credit scores (650+) as well enough income for monthly expenses to qualify.
